According to statistics, there are about 195,000 Teus (unit of measurement of cargo capacity in containers) passing through Chan May Port (going in and out of Da Nang Port from Quang Tri, Quang Binh, Thua Thien Hue provinces and Laos). The distance saved when using Chan May Port is about 70km by one-way truck. The cost saved from not having to travel through the Hai Van tunnel system is estimated at about 70 USD per round trip.

For Thua Thien Hue, there is 1 economic zone, Chan May – Lang Co, and 6 industrial zones, including Phu Bai, Phong Dien, Tu Ha, La Son, Phu Da, Quang Vinh, and more than 80 large and small enterprises exporting and importing goods by container with many items such as: Frit, fiber, fabric, cotton, clothing, wood, food, beer yeast, packaging, garment materials, machinery and equipment lines, minerals and aquatic products… Almost 85% of goods are exported and imported through Da Nang Port, there are a few orders that have to be transferred to Saigon or Hai Phong due to delivery conditions.

Many enterprises in Phu Bai Industrial Park analyzed that for freight transport, it is not only about moving on the road but also about having a yard, warehouse to store goods at the factory and at the seaport. Meanwhile, in Chan May there is a lack of storage points so ships have few options. When doing a simple calculation, transporting goods from Phu Bai Industrial Park to Chan May Port and Da Nang when both sides have the same service will save a lot for enterprises. When reducing logistics depreciation, there will be better product prices, improving competitiveness in the market.

It is known that Da Nang Port is operating at full capacity, many orders have to be transported to further provinces, which further increases costs for businesses. Meanwhile, according to experts, Chan May Port has all the conditions and factors to expand its scale and form container services. Most businesses are very supportive and expect Chan May Port to soon deploy container services, open routing lines to shorten transportation time, reduce logistics costs, save time, and contribute to the success of businesses.

The provincial leaders have also oriented, supported, affirmed to create favorable conditions, always accompany, support with the highest determination to contribute to the development of Chan May Port, worthy of being an international seaport with modern scale and services, an attractive, friendly and safe destination for shipping lines and tourists. With that orientation, the province has also issued a plan to develop logistics services; build logistics centers in Chan May – Lang Co Economic Zone, industrial parks and clusters to improve efficiency, create regional connectivity.

To implement and produce container goods, in addition to orientation, policies and synchronous investment as well as the “conductor” role of the State are very important. When the container route is formed and maintained at Chan May, it will create more jobs for workers, contribute to increasing revenue, and promote socio-economic development of the province and the Central region.

Mr. Tran Trong Thong, Head of the Chan May – Lang Co Economic Zone Representative Office under the Provincial Economic and Industrial Zone Management Board, informed that recently, the Provincial People’s Committee has approved the development planning policy at Chan May Port. Chan May Port is planned as a logistics service area with an area of ​​over 50 hectares, oriented to become a class I logistics service area; of the 50 hectares, about 23 hectares will be used for container services.

According to Mr. Thong, one factor that the public is concerned about is the development between industry and welcoming tourists by ship. The important thing is to re-establish the planning, ensuring neatness and scale according to the planning. At that time, the seaport will be very modern and clean.

Chan May Port leaders said that Chan May Port owns 760 meters of wharf, 12 meters of depth in front of the wharf, meeting all necessary conditions to receive general cargo ships with a capacity of up to 70,000 DWT, container ships with a capacity of 4,000 Teus and passenger ships with a total capacity of up to 225,282 GRT. Recently, wharf No. 2 has been put into operation with the strategic orientation of successfully receiving container services, aiming to become an “agent” of domestic and international shipping lines.

Another positive factor is that recently, the implementation of projects in industrial parks in the province, such as Phu Bai Industrial Park, An Hoa Industrial Park and Chan May – Lang Co Economic Zone; in Quang Tri, such as Nam Dong Ha Industrial Park, Quan Ngang Industrial Park, has been quite active. The formation of these industrial parks will create a huge demand in the field of maritime transport. This is truly one of the good opportunities for Chan May Port to invest in expanding the reception of container cargo, the main element in the development of logistics services.
